Dermophoto (a proto-photojournal) was started in November 2004 as a small project to keep me busy in the grey Glaswegian winter with a cheap digital camera, also to satisfy a rather specific obsession with brick walls; in the time up to now I’ve ended up much further afield than Glasgow, been through four cameras (including a doomed Canon Powershot G9 that found its rather sad demise in a sink full of dirty washing up water), managed to find many other things to photograph aside from walls (which I still love), and put about 1,600 images (at last count, March 2010) online at the blog.
The main idea of 10x10x10 is to show, at any one time, 1,000 pictures from the above blog at LiveJournal. A long-suffering friend tried for a good while and great patience to knock an external blog into shape outside of the confines of LJ, but in the end I think it was the linear nature of that kind of site that floored us. I wanted a more convenient way to show off more photos, and so 10x10x10 was born (eventually).
The photos on 10x10x10 aren’t in any particular order – you might find really early ones next to dense pictures from a few weeks ago... Aside from the first gallery, which will be 100 of the newest ones, and will be changed every few weeks or so, there are a couple of themed ones, for example featuring people, or from my trips to Russia (the walls there are just exquisite). I guess the main idea is that you’ll rummage about and see what you can find. I like that approach as it’s pretty much what I do when I take pictures.
There’s also a link to the books I’ve put together on blurb.com. The book Stop was awarded an honourable mention at the Photography.Book.Now in 2008. There’s also a contact page if you want to send me questions about why I like concrete so much, or want to buy a print. I’d be really interested in any comments you have.
